Bird of the Month - May 2017

As springtime arrives in Sacramento, you may notice a newcomer to your nectar feeder – the Black-chinned Hummingbird. A visitor during the warmer months, the Black-chinned is easily distinguished from the ever-present Anna's Hummingbird by its white "preacher collar" and more slender physique. Another tip-off is the male Black-chinned's vibrant grape-purple gorget (see photo inset) as compared to the Anna's more pinkish, or raspberry throat. Enjoy them while they're here!
